A Life Remembered

Obituary

Fredrick “Fred” George Avery, 69, of Groves, Texas, passed away peacefully in his home Monday, October 12, 2026.

He was born July 18, 1957, in Port Arthur, Texas to the late John Avery and Mary Lou Hallford. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Michael Avery.

Fred rarely met a stranger and will be missed by many. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and adoring grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Susie Avery, two daughters and a son-in-law, Natalie Avery and Amanda and Jared Castolenia, two grandchildren, Clara and Jasper, and two sisters, Kathy Gore and Susan Gattis-Pierson (Alfred).

Fred’s faith was the foundation of every part of his life. He was passionate about the Word of God and cherished the opportunity to share the gospel whenever he could. He was also a man who did his best to practice what he preached and quite literally would give someone the shirt off his back.

Fred loved cars and motorcycles (Harley Davidsons to be exact). His daughters have visited more Harley shops than they can remember because that was his favorite part of any vacation or road trip. After years of working as a mechanic in local refineries, he enjoyed working part-time selling used cars during his retirement.

Fred loved to bring people together over food and saw the beauty in gathering for a meal. Whether the family dinner table, Thanksgiving meals, or church fellowship dinners, he wanted to cook something delicious that everyone could enjoy.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Fred’s life on Sunday, October 18, 2026, at Proctor Baptist Church in Port Arthur, Texas. A visitation will be held at 1 p.m. with the service following at 2 p.m.

Messages of Love

From family and friends

Michelle and Roel Guerra October 16, 2026
Sook and family, I’ve been thinking about you nonstop since I heard the news. My heart is so heavy for you right now. I’m so sorry, Sook. Losing Fred is a loss that hits our whole family hard, and I can’t imagine how deep the pain must be for you. Fred was such a steady, kind presence. He was more than just my cousin’s husband—he was family. I’ll always remember the way he made people feel welcome and how much he clearly loved you. Those memories of him will stay with me. Please know I’m here for you in any way you need. If you want to talk, cry, sit in silence, or if there’s anything practical I can take off your plate, just say the word. You don’t have to go through this alone. Holding you close in my thoughts and prayers. May the Love and Faith you and Fred shared give you strength in the days ahead. With all our love, Michelle and Roel.
