Velvet was a true gypsy at heart, with a deep love for traveling and exploring new countries, especially Ireland. Her passion for gardening led her to become a former member of the Master Gardeners, and she was known for having an impressive collection of tools, all marked pink for ease of identification. Velvet had a big heart and was a firm believer in second chances, always making sure others were taken care of. She was a beloved friend, known for her ability to speak her mind and her stubborn yet loving nature. She rescued many animals throughout her life and enjoyed decorating for holidays, with Halloween and Christmas being her favorites. To her cherished grandchildren, she was affectionately known as "Neena."
Velvet is survived by her loving husband, Jim Alexander; daughters, Shatonya "Tonya" Freeman and husband Jeffery, Reverend Rosa Miller and husband Reverend Timothy; stepson, Christopher Alexander; grandchildren, Kiera Hill and husband Jacob, Jude Freeman, Caleb Hollyfield, Ziva Miller, Hadassah Miller, and Phoenix Sage Alexander; great-grandchildren, Everleigh Hill, Cooper Hill, Abigail Hill, and one on the way; numerous siblings, nieces, nephews, and other loving family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Fontenot; and ten siblings.
